Everybody wants to go to heaven but seemingly nobody want to die. However, die we must for it is appointed to everyone (Heb 9:27). Nobody wants to die and go to hell, that is, if they know what hell is like. If they know it is filled with pain and sorrow, and fire and brimstone they definitely don’t want to go there. Everyone wants to go to heaven, that place of eternal rest, but sadly most will not get there. They won’t get there because they haven’t obeyed the gospel of Christ (Mk 16:16), continued in the doctrine of Christ (2 Jn 9), and remained faithful unto death (Rev 2:2). Even so, there will be a few who will get to heaven, and to those chosen few, heaven will be a beautiful place. Let us take a scriptural view of how beautiful heaven truly will be.
Heaven is Place of Bliss
I like how the apostle Paul describes this place of bliss and how every faithful Christian should long to be there.
“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord” (2 Cor 5:1-8)
I really like what Paul says here because he shows us that we can be confident knowing that if we walk by faith according to God’s Word being our guide, that we can enter into this wonderful place of bliss. We also learn from the text that old physical bodies will be done away with and we will be provided with new spiritual bodies. This fact is further shown in several other places in the Bible.
“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption” (1 Cor 15:50 ).
You see we must go through a change before we can enter into heaven.
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself” (Philip 3:20 ).
Now no one knows exactly what that new spiritual body will be like not even the apostle John.
“Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3:2)
However, we do know that this new body that we are given is one that will last for an eternity. We learn more about what will happen to us in heaven from the discussion that Jesus had with some Sadducees in Luke 20:27-36:
“Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. “Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. “And the second took her as wife, and he died childless. “Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died. “Last of all the woman died also. “Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.” And Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. “But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; “nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection”.
The book of Revelation gives us even more insight into the beauty of heaven.
“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Rev 21:1)
Here I believe John is talking about heaven itself, and in this symbolic description, we learn several things about the bliss of heaven, especially in verse 4. God will wipe away all tears and there will be no more death, no more sorrow, crying, or pain. If that were all that heaven was it would be a paradise indeed! People here on earth are constantly trying to obtain all these but failing in all regards.
Think about how wonderful this place will be. No more funerals or cemeteries. No more hospitals, medicines, blindness, wheelchairs, or canes. No more allergies, colds, flu, etc. No more cancer, heart disease, and all that afflicts mankind. All of these things will be gone if we make it to heaven. We will get to rest from our labors (Rev 14:13), and the greatest thing of all is that we will be in the very presence of God. So clearly we can see that heaven is a place of bliss.
Now that we have examined things about heaven, let us now take a look at how heaven is described in the book Revelation. If you have the time, read the following passages more than once. Read it over and over again because this life is hard for all faithful Christians knowing that they will suffer persecutions for the cause of Christ (2 Tim 3:12 f; 1 Pet 4:16). Nevertheless, if we endure, we shall receive a crown of life__HEAVEN! (Jam 1:12)
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony , the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” (Rev 21:9 -27)
“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever” (Rev 22:1-5).
No matter how great your imagination is, or how vivid a picture you had in your mind from this description, it will not even come close to the real beauty of heaven. That is why we can only say how beautiful heaven will be because we can’t fully know its beauty until we get there.
Heaven is the place that we want to go and everyone can go there that is willing to love God enough to obey His Will (Matt 7:21). Every Christian should take great comfort in knowing that God has promised us a wonderful home in this place called heaven.
If you would like to go this beautiful place called heaven then you must first become a Christian. The only way to get access to heaven is through the gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:1-4). In order to embrace the hope of heaven, we must first believe with the heart and confess with the mouth that Jesus is the son of God (Rom 10:9,10). We must repent of our sins, that is, to have a change of heart and stop living our lives for ourselves and start living them for God (Lk 13:3), and we must be buried with Christ by baptism. (Rom 6:3,4). Lastly, we must remain faithful to the Lord until we die (Rev 210). It is only when we are obedient to all these things that we become a child of God, and can have the hope of heaven being our home someday. Truly, is this too much to ask for eternal life in heaven with God?
