Bad Things Happen To All Christians
Society has always recognized that “Bad things happen to good people”, but society has never understood why. However, this has lead many to depart from doing good unto others, and to develop another saying, “Everyone for themselves”. Others mock the scriptures by saying, “Do unto others before they do unto you.” No wonder why we live in a greedy world where everyone is looking out for themselves, and ignoring he needs of the helpless. So, does the scriptures tell us why bad things happen to good people, especially Christians?
Consider The Life Of Paul
Before Paul became a Christian he was a profited much in the Jewish religion. “Paul said of himself, ”And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.” He was a highly educated Jew and zealous toward God. He said of himself, “I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.” Acts 22:3 As long as Paul did evil to the church did he prospered, and no man before or since persecuted the church as much as Paul. He said, “I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.” Acts 22:4 “As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.” Acts 8:3 Paul said, “I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.” Acts 26:9-11 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on you: And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that killed him.” Acts 22:19-20 “For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.” 1 Cor 15:9
It wasn’t until Paul was converted from Judaism to Christianity that his troubles began. Jesus said of Paul, “For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” Acts 9:16 And the persecutions Paul endured is enough to make even the strongest Christian of our time fall away. Just imagine if all these evils came upon you: “In labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness — “ 2 Cor 11:23-28 And above all these he also had a thorn in the flesh which he 3 times prayed to be removed, but was rejected by God. 2 Cor 12:9-12 Some say Paul was beheaded in the days of Nero, but the bible gives no record of how Paul died, but his writings did abruptly end while still in the hands of his captors. Needless to say, Paul suffered as a Christian beyond measure.
Conclusion: The bible gives no record whatsoever for anyone to conclude that if Paul had remained in the position of the chief persecutor of the church, that he would have suffered for it. In fact, if God had wanted Paul to cease persecuting the church, he could have killed him instantly, but this never happened. No one suffered for persecuting the church, only those belonging to the church were persecuted. This warning was given not only to Paul, but to every Christian. Paul said of every Christian, present, past and future, “All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” 2 Tim 3:12 It is by these persecutions that we know that we are doing the Will of God. Paul said it this way, “I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased.” Gal 5:11 The apostle Peter said that we should be comforted knowing that all Christians will endure the same persecutions. 1 Pet 5:9,10 This we can confirm, for God is not a respecter of person. Acts 10:34 f; Col 3:25 Therefore, let us not be overwhelmed when we live godly as Christians, and suffer fiery trials of persecutions for the cause of Christ. 1 Pet 4:12 Judgment first begins with the church, and if it first begins with us, what shall be the end of those who obey not the gospel of Christ? Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God not be ashamed, but glorify God by committing their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator. 1 Pet 4:16-19
