7 Abominable Sins

Though some would have you believe that sin is sin, and all are the same, the bible would beg to differ. Though any kind of unrepentant sin can send one to hell, the bible speaks of one kind of sin that God referred to by a different name: It was called an Abomination.

There are some things which are said to be abominable to the Lord Prov. 6:16-19 The word “abominable” refers to something which is extremely despised. Therefore, there are some things which God hates extremely.

7 Abominations To God Prov. 6:16-19

1. A Proud Look

“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord . . . ” (Prov. 16:5). Pride stems from an attitude of the heart – an attitude of arrogance, superiority, boastfulness.

A feeling of superiority might derive from one’s position in life: The wealthy often feel superior to the poor; The educated often feel superior to the uneducated; The strong often feel superior to the weak. This is why God hid the His Word from the wise and prudent, and revealed them to the simple. Mt 11:25,26 This is why God called not many wise, strong, or rich to the Kingdom. 1 Cor 11:25-31

A feeling of superiority might derive from self-righteousness; the Pharisee displayed an attitude of arrogant superiority toward the publican Lk. 18:9-14 This attitude is still present when one displays a “holier-than-thou” disposition.

”Who say, ‘Keep to yourself, Do not come near me, For I am holier than you!’ These are smoke in My nostrils, A fire that burns all the day.” Isa 65:5

A Christian must display humility. He needs to imitate the humility of Jesus Phil. 2:2-3 and not the superiority of the wicked.

2. A Lying Tongue

Lying lips are abomination to the Lord.” (Prov. 12:22). A lying tongue stems from a dishonest heart. People lie for different reasons. Some auto dealers lie to sell automobiles. Some politicians lie to win an election. Some preachers lie to gain wealth. Rom 16:17,18; 1 Tim 6:3-10

There is no justification for one to lie to another. No matter the reason why one lies, the scriptures reveal that ALL LIARS shall have their part in the lake of fire. Rev 21:8

“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.” Prov 12:22

Jeremiah spoke about the prophet who spoke lies, prophesying of their own heart to deceive the righteous to turn from God. He said, “Let he that has my Word, let him speak my Word faithfully.” Jer 23:28 Paul wrote, “For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.” 2 Cor 2:17

3. Hands That Shed Innocent Blood

“Shedding innocent blood” is a reference to  ‘murder.” God hates the murderer. Jezebel and Ahab were guilty of this sin when they slaughtered innocent Naboth in order to make his family inheritance, his vineyard, their own. 1Kgs. 21

A physician,who is trained to save life, uses their medical instruments to kill an innocent unborn baby, (Abortion). Those hands which should be healing and ministering to the sick are being used to slaughter the innocent. This is an abomination to God!

God condemns murderers from the very beginning. It was Cain who murdered righteous Abel. Mt 23:35 It was the Jews who murdered an innocent Jesus. Mt 27:24,25 Anyone who kills, or attempts to kill the righteous is an abomination to God. Deut 19:10; Isa 59:7,8

4. A Heart That Devises Wickedness

“The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord” Prov. 15:26. Before wickedness is committed, it is planned and plotted. One example is given in Proverbs chapter 1.

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privately for the innocent without cause: let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: we shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil Prov 11-13.

Wicked men devised wicked plans. Whenever a robbery is committed, someone devised wicked plans. Every pornographic movie or magazine is demonstration that someone spent their time devising wickedness to tempt the weakness of man to make gain of him. Isa 57:14 God abhors this kind of heart.

Anyone who indulges in acts of homosexuality and lesbianism are guilty of devising wicked imaginations. These are the ones who imagine themselves as the opposite sex (Transgenders). They imagine themselves as married to one another. They imagine themselves as parents. They imagine themselves as normal. The imagine themselves as born in this condition. All homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, and all who condone and defend such are an abomination to God, and are worthy of death. Rom 1:26-32

5. Feet That Are Swift In Running To Mischief

This condemns those who hastily follow through in committing the wicked devising of their hearts. Indeed, the Lord said, “The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord” Prov. 15:9. Those who have hardened their hearts toward the Lord’s will, and scornfully rejected His word in order to brazenly commit wickedness are abominable to the Lord. Prov. 3:32; 11:20; 15:8-9

Think before we act is profitable to all mankind. We should all remember to be swift to hear, but slow to speak, and slow to anger. Jam 1:19  Instead of fleeing fornications many run toward them forgetting that  23,000 fell in one day because of this sin.1 Cor 6:18; 1 Cor 10:8

6. A False Witness

A false witness is a special kind of liar. His lying assists in perverting justice. It is singled out for condemnation by the Lord. The false witness distorts the truth and causes injustice to be perpetrated. The victim leaves the court without further recourse available to them.

In capital offenses, the false witness could bring the death of the innocent. In the record of Jezebel plotting the death of Naboth in order to obtain his vineyard, lying witnesses testified that Naboth had cursed God and the king, resulting in him being executed (1 Kgs. 21). These false witnesses murdered Naboth just as certainly as did Jezebel. God hates the false witness.

7. He That Sows Discord

David described the unity of God’s people as something both good and pleasant (Psa. 133:1). Those who disrupt the unity of God’s people are objects of God’s wrath.

The unity of God’s people is destroyed by gossips and talebearers. “Where no wood is, there the fire goes out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife” (Prov. 26:20,21). A whisperer separates chief friends. (Prov. 16:28; 17:9).

Sometimes the unity of God’s people is destroyed by self-willed men who are bent on having their own way. Sometimes the unity of the church is destroyed by men who introduce things into its work and worship which are unauthorized. Men who disrupt the unity of God’s people are abhorred by the Lord.

Conclusion: Conclusively God hates sin and deplores all such who commit it. Thanks be unto God which sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 Jn 4:10 Thanks be unto God which gives us the victory through Christ Jesus when we become obedient to the gospel of Christ. 1 Cor 15:57 If we are willing to turn from our sins and repent, God is willing to forgive us our sins, even our abominable sins. Acts 17:30; 1 Jn 1:9
