No one has ever seen God and lived (Jn 1:18 cf; 5:37). No man since the time of Jesus’ ascension back into heaven has seen him. There is no way I can prove to an atheist that God or Christ exist except by the scripture. Except by faith I cannot even prove the scriptures are the inspiration of God (2 Tim 3:16,17). I don’t want to dissuade you into denying God’s existence, but I do want to prove to you that no man can accept God’s existence except it be by faith. Even if I could show you the Godhead this would not be acceptable to God, for you would have believed it by sight and not by faith.
The Hebrew writer said, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Heb 11:6). Take note of the very next verse: “By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith” (Heb 11:7). Noah didn’t wait until the rain fell to begin preparing the ark. No! He believed God at face value and by faith built the ark to God’s specifications and brought the animals into the ark two by two before rain ever fell upon the earth. This was true for every servant of God from Abraham to Moses and to every prophet of God. They all walked by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7).
It was by faith that Abraham offered up his only begotten son to be sacrificed as God commanded Him. It was by faith Moses faced Pharaoh and marched the children of Israel out of Egypt. It was by faith Joshua marched around the walls of Jericho until they fell the seventh day. It was by faith that Elijah challenged all the false prophets of Jezebel. And it is by faith that everyone must come to God in order to be saved.
Come the day of judgment every person will stand before God and be judged according to their works by God’s Word (2 Cor 5:10). Then and only then will everyone see God and Christ. Everyone shall bow before their presence and every tongue will confess Jesus to be the Christ (Philip 2:10,11). However, this will not save the wicked from their sins. Why? Because they confessed such by sight and not by faith. Paul said in Romans 10:9,10, “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”. You have some say, “Seeing is believing”. However, Paul didn’t say one is to believe with their eyes. No! They are to believe with their heart. As Paul said, “But you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was one delivered you” (Rom 6:17).
The Bible cannot prove denominations are right or that the names of such are even found in the Bible. The bible does not prove that a man is justified by faith alone, to the exclusion of the love, mercy, and the grace of God, repentance of sins, and obedience to the gospel of Christ. The bible does not prove that a person can be saved out of the church as well as in it. The bible cannot prove the doctrines and commandments of men. In fact, the Bible cannot prove false doctrine of any kind. However, here are a few things the bible can verily prove.
1. Baptism is essential to salvation from sin. “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mk. 16:16). “Repent, and let everyone of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us” (1 Pet. 3:21).
2. We are to sing in worship to God. “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Eph. 5:19). “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Col. 3:16).
3. A child of God can fall from grace or apostatize, and eventually, be lost. “You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by the law, you have fallen from grace” (Gal. 5:4). “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Cor. 10:12). “Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins” (Jam. 5:19-20).
4. When a Christian sins, he must repent and confess his sins in order to be forgiven. “. . . for your heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you” (Acts 8:21-22). “But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin. . . . If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 Jn. 1:7,9).
The bible can prove the gospel of Christ. It can prove Christians are to continue in the doctrine of Christ and His apostles (Acts 2:42 f; 2 Jn 9). It can prove that the church is headed by Christ and guided by qualified elders and deacons (Col 1:18 f; Acts 20:28; 1 Tim 3:1-13). It can prove that all who obey not the gospel shall be lost in eternal damnation from the presence of the Lord (2 Thess 1:7-9).
If these things are proven by the Bible, and I believe they are, then all teaching and practice contrary to them are wrong! The Bible says, “Prove all things; hold firm that which is good” (1 Thess. 5:21). The bible cannot prove false teaching, but it definitely proves the gospel and doctrine of Christ.
