The Race For Eternal Life

The Bible speaks of a race and Solomon said that the race is not always won by the fastest. We know that because most of us have seen the fastest horse lose their race. Any number of things can cause the greatest of horses to lose. Therefore, the winners must be prepared for the unforeseen. “I returned and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happens to them all” (Eccl 9:11).

Paul said of a race that all who enter, enter to win; but only one will win. “Know you not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that you may obtain” (1 Cor 9:24). Every horse that has run in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, or the Belmont were all prepared to win. Not all won, but all had the opportunity to win. Are you prepared to win eternal life?

The Hebrews writer also wrote of a race, the Christian race. It is a race which is not dependent upon time and chance and it is not decided upon who has the most support and money. It is a race which all who enters has the opportunity to win. “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us”  (Heb12:1).

In the scheme of eternity our participation in the Christian race makes all the difference. Let each of us determine that we are going to participate in and win the Christian race. In order to win we all must enter the race for eternal life. The entry fee is our obedience to the gospel of Christ (Rom 10:10 f; Acts 2:38). Once we are added to the Lord’s church by Jesus Christ (Acts 2:47), we have the opportunity to win. However, we must prepare for our individual race. We must study to be approved of God (2 Tim 2:15). We must put on the whole armor of God (Eph 6:11-18). We must continue in the doctrine of Christ and his apostles (Acts 2:42 f; 2 Jn 9). We must endure trials and persecutions (Jam 1:12). We must remain faithful unto death (Rev 2:10). If we do these things, we shall receive our crown of life.
