People today don’t trust anyone. All we need to do is look at Washington D.C. with the White House and Congress and it’s easy to see why trust is at an all-time low. This current president has told so many half-truths, partials truths, and no truths at all that it’s impossible to know if he is able to tell the truth without a hyperbole attached to it. All we need to do is look at certain networks (e.g., Fox and MSNBC) and realize that Americans are being fed a pack of lies. On top of that, communist and atheist countries like Russia are feeding the American public propaganda in order to make a monetary gain of them. And if we think lies began in government or the media we would not be correct. The fact is, religion, or the lack thereof, is the king of all liars.
So, who can you trust? Within the church, we’re quick to say, “Trust God!” (and that’s the correct answer). But do we trust in God’s Word? If we did then why don’t most obey God?
How many have obeyed the gospel of Christ (Rom 10:17 ff; Rom 10:10; Acts 2:38)? How many are continuing in the doctrine of Christ and His apostles (Jn 8:31 ff; Acts 2:42; 2 Jn 9)? The answer to both of these questions is very few!
How many trust God to take vengeance on their behalf (Rom 12:19 f; 2 Thess 1:6-9). How many trust God to deliver them from evil (Gal 1:4)? How many trust God through trials and tribulations (2 Tim 3:11,12)? Perhaps most are like those spoken of by the prophet Jeremiah.
“As for the word that you have spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto you. But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goes forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil. But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine” (Jer 44:16-18).
I could care less who you vote for or what news organizations you trust. All they can do is leave you misinformed or dead. However, I do care about your soul, because “it’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb 10:29-31). This is the same God which can destroy both your body and soul in hell (Matt 10:28).
It may be true that government and the media will continue to lie to us with impunity. However, it is not acceptable that false teachers are lying to their followers and leading their souls straight to hell. To combat lying politicians we can vote them out of office. To combat fake news we can change the channel. To combat false religions we can be as the Bereans in the book of Acts. “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so“. We can put on the whole armor of God to withstand the trickery of the Devil (Eph 6:11-18). We can try false teachers by the Word of God (1 Jn 4:1).
This is what we can see in Proverbs 3:5, 6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” If we truly want to go to heaven we must trust is the God who gave us His only Son, who cannot lie, and that promised eternal life to all who obey Him (Jn 3:16 ff; Tit 1:2; Heb 6:18,19).
