Are members of the church of Christ the only ones going to heaven? That is a legitimate question that needs to be addressed to many who reject the gospel and doctrine of Christ.
The Bible teaches that there is only ONE true church, and that church belongs to Jesus Christ (Matt 16:16-18) There is only ONE body (Ephesians 4:4). The Bible teaches us that the “body” is the church (Eph.1:22,23 f; Col 1:18). That means there is just ONE church. In addition, we read in Ephesians 5:23 that Jesus is the Savior of the body. He is not the Savior of anything else but the body. So he is the Savior of the church and only the church. Jesus is not going to save anyone who is not a member of His church as only the saved are added to His church (Acts 2:47). So to state it plainly, the saved are members of the church and the church is made up of saved people. No one outside the church is going to be saved.
The name of the church which Christ built was called, the church of God (Acts 20:28), the Church of the firstborn (Heb 12:23), and the churches of Christ, (Rom 16:16) just to name a few. In all the names given, they all were in reference to the One who died for the church, the man Christ Jesus (Eph 5:25).
A more imperative question would be, “Are all members of the churches of Christ going to heaven”? First of all, not all churches of Christ are sound churches. Many of them have gone astray following the ways of denominationalism in order to attract more members and to be more like the world. Secondly, some members of sound churches will be lost because they could not continue in the doctrine of Christ and His apostles (2 Jn 9). Jesus made that perfectly clear when he said, “Not everyone who says to Me,’Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matt 7:21). As He went on to say, “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness’ (Matt 7:22-23)!
Even so, I can say conclusively, that if you are not a member of a sound church of Christ which teaches the gospel of Christ for its admission, you are lost. If you are not a member of a sound church of Christ which continues in the doctrine of Christ and His apostles, you are lost. If you personally are a member of a sound church of Christ and you have fallen away and die in that condition, you will be lost. Only a select few will be saved come the day of judgment, and those few will be chosen from the members of the churches of Christ (Matt 7:14). Bottom line, the church which Christ built, the church of Christ, is our only hope of salvation!
