The church which Christ built has been in existence for nearly 2,000 years. In the apostle’s day, some preferred the rich over the poor. Some were kicking others out of the church. Some were trying to mix Judaism with Christianity . In its local form, the church has never been perfect, but even in its imperfection, there have always been something right with the Lord’s church. Let us examine the local church of Christ and what is right with the church of Christ.
The Gospel of Christ
The only way to enter into the church of Christ is to obey the gospel of Christ (1 Cot 15:1-4 ff; Rom 10:10; Acts 2:38; Rev 2:10). This is the same gospel which was preached on the day of Pentecost, and was obeyed by every Christian convert (Acts 2,8,9,10, 16,18). Changing the gospel was totally prohibited. (Gal 1:6-9). All churches of Christ today abide by the exact same gospel as Christ and his apostles taught.
Jesus is the head of the church of Christ (Eph 1:22,23 f; Col 1:18). However, the Lord set qualified elders to be the head of the local church of Christ. They are established to guide the flock, to instruct them, to guard them, and to protect them from false doctrines (Acts 20:28-31). I would like to say all local churches of Christ have them, but those who do have them are truly blessed (Heb 13:7,17).
The scripture instructs the church how to worship and conduct itself. They gathered each first day of the week to break bread, to give of their means, and to hear the Word by the means of preaching (Acts 20:7 f; 1 Cor 16:1-3). They were commanded to sing without the use of instrumental music (Eph 5:19). They prayed and sang with the spirit and understanding also (1 Cor 14:15). Most all churches of Christ today worship God in spirit and in truth (Jn 4:23,24).
Conclusion: This is a brief listing of the things all churches of Christ do which are in total agreement with the Word of God. In these things, they are truly worthy of praise and honor. In my next lesson I will outline a few things that local church has strayed from God’s Word and are in need of correction.
