What is your preacher teaching you? Is he teaching you about a book he wrote (2 Cor 2:4,5)? Is he teaching you how to commit adultery (Matt 19:9 ff; Rom 7:2,3; 1 Cor 7:10,11,39)? Is he teaching you gays were born that way (Rom 1:26,27). Is he teaching you abortion is a right to choose (Ps 139:13 f; Job 31:15? Is he teaching you that greed is good and that the poor are evil (Prov 23:4 f; Jam 2:5,6)? Is he teaching you that racism is acceptable with God (Gal 3:28)? Is he teaching you to use politics to spread the gospel (Mk 16:15 ff; Mt 28:19; Eph 3:10)? Is he teaching you that women are equal with man and therefore has the right to preach and teach like men (1 Cor 14:33-40 ff; 1 Tim 2:11-14; 2 Tim 2:2)? Is he teaching you that it is evil to speak where the bible speaks and to be silent where the bible is silent (1 Cor 4:6f f; 1 Pet 4:11; Rev 22:18,19)? Is he teaching you that God did not inspire all scripture (2 Tim 3:16,17)? Is he teaching you that the commandments and doctrines of men are to be obeyed as commandments of God (Matt 15:7-9)? Is your preacher teaching you how to sin by his bad example (Rom 2:21,22 f; 1 Tim 4:12)? If so, then you have been listening and learning from a false teacher or preacher!
Why would any preacher teach you such things? Money! “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple” (Rom 16:17-19). All churches, denominational or the churches of Christ, pay their preacher to preach to them what they already believe. They do not pay them to be corrected. They do not pay them to preach what the bible actually says.
This is why when you read the scripture you are told that you can’t understand the bible on your own. How do we know this is a lie! Because the bible tells us so. “At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight” (Matt 11:25-26). It has been revealed many times that the bible was written at an 8th grade level. This means that even a 12 or 13 year old child can understand the bible when they read it.
Jeremiah the prophet wrote, “For My people are foolish, they have not known Me. They are silly children, and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.” (Jer 4:22). It has been proven time and time again that the higher your educational level, the greater chance you will be an atheist, an agnostic, or a deist. The higher your educational level, the greater chance you will alter God’s Word in lieu of your own opinion.
I am not trying to suggest that all preachers who get a salary are innately evil. What I am telling you is that your preacher has no incentive under the present system of telling you what the bible actually says. To most, preaching is a lucrative occupation that provides for their family. Paul warned a young Timothy that such preachers argue and debate over words, twisting their meaning, perverting the word of God. Why? “If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain” (1 Tim 6:3-5). Then Paul concluded the matter by saying, “Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” ( 1 Tim 6:9-10). What are we supposed to do as Christians when we discover such wickedness, “From such withdraw yourself” (1 Tim 6:5)
Preachers, let us never compromise, dilute, or change the Lord’s message to gain personal wealth. Elders, let not your desire to gain number make you seek out preachers who will pervert the Word of truth. Members, always be on guard against false teachers by putting on the whole armor of God (Eph 6:11-18 f; 1 Jn 4:1). Be as the Bereans who searched the scripture daily to make sure what was being preached to them was the truth of God (Acts 17:11). Remember, at the end of the day, it is still your soul. Therefore, make sure what you are being taught is the unadulterated Word of God!
