Even as I write this article, your bible is being rewritten to fit the beliefs of those who want to circumvent its teaching. This did not begin today, this month, this year, or even this decade. It has been going on at a snails pace for many centuries. The Catholics began this endeavor and you can witness what it has led to over time. Instead of elders and deacons to lead the church, they have cardinals, priests, nuns, and one leader they call a Pope. Instead of baptism (Immersion), they have sprinkling. Instead of following one doctrine, they have three. They follow Christianity, Judaism, and Paganism. Instead of one bible they have two.
Protestants have added to the bible as well. They have changed their bibles to reflect their belief as well. This is why a Baptist bible differs from all other bibles. This is why there is a Mormon bible. This is why many denominations follow the writings of uninspired men over the teaching of Christ and his apostles.
The churches of Christ have also allowed the bible to be changed. They don’t erase the bible or have another bible, but they do seek to redefine it. They, like many protestant religions, use commentaries and lexicons to make the bible fit their set of dogmas. If they want to eat in the churches and allow the church to pay for it, they dismiss the commandments of Paul as ludicrous (1 Cor 11:22,34).
If they want women to be teachers of little children or other women each Lord’s day, they dismiss the writings of Paul as uninspired (2 Tim 3:16 f; 2 Pet 3:15,16). Some will contend that Paul’s teaching was for its time and not ours (1 Cor 4:17). Some will twist Paul’s writing to say women can teach in the assembly as long as they don’t teach men, ignoring the direct commandment for women to remain silent in the assembly (1 Cor 14:33-40). Many will redefine assembly to mean the general assembly (Amply defined by them as between 11am-12:pm), teaching women can speak in all other assemblies. Some will simply dismiss Paul as a woman hater. Still others will call Priscilla a preacher and thus contradict the direct commandment given by Paul for women not to be teachers of men (1 Tim 2:11-15).
If they want to commit adultery, they redefine what fornication means (Mt 19:9). If they want homosexuals to be apart of their assembly, they justify them by saying that they are born this way (Rom 1:26,27,32). Is there any sin that they can’t justify?
If they want to build colleges or orphanages they will simply invoke the words, “God didn’t say not to”, in order to allow the church to fund such practices. They also use this devilish doctrine to have church supported parties, banquets, leisure trips, etc.
Is it any wonder now that liberal churches of Christ see no harm in having instrumental music, and some have even began to use them in their worship? Is it any wonder that some liberal churches of Christ now have women preachers? Some have women waiting on tables. Some have women leading prayer. Some have women giving announcements. Some have women song leaders. Why not? If the church has the right to redefine God’s Word, then they have the right to change God’s Word. God forbid! Remember the warning of Paul concerning anyone who would change the Word of God: “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Gal 1:6-8).
