There is not a better illustration I can think of for what God intended for mankind to obey than the actions of the Republican and Democratic party. Shocking isn’t it, that two carnal and wicked political parties could be used for something good. I am speaking about the strict letter of the law and the love of fellow brethren.
The Republican party goes by the letter of the law. They are against abortion, homosexuality and gay marriage, and most all kinds of sexual immorality. Yet, they fight tooth and nail to protect the rich and affluent and give as little as possible to those who are in need. The Democratic party rejects the letter of the law allowing most all kinds of immorality. Yet, they try and help the aged, less fortunate and disabled.
So, what does this mean to members of the Lord’s church? It means that within the church itself these same two factions coexist. The liberal side of the church are like the Democrats. They resist the letter of the law and call all such who go by the letter, legalist. Yet, they give liberally to those inside and outside of the church who have basic needs which need to be met. The conservative side of the church are like the Republicans who go strictly by the letter of the law. Yet, they help only themselves. They will pay a preacher but give little to anyone who needs assistance, oft times even its members.
I have been in both sides of the church and I find that these two factions need to come back together if the church is going to grow as the Lord intended. The liberals need to apply the letter of the law and the conservatives need to show more love and compassion to the needy. These two basic doctrines need be applied even as the scriptures instruct us. Paul writing to the Corinthians said, “That in us might learn not to go beyond that which was written (1 Cor 4:6). This is the letter of the law. Jesus was quoted to have said in the book of Acts, “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35). This is the love of the law. If we are going to obey the gospel of Christ we must also obey the doctrine of Christ and his apostles and not just part of it. We must obey all of it. Keep the law and apply the love. This is the whole duty of the church!
