I admit, I am not very knowledgeable about politics. However, I do watch the news from various sources, and I do read what the pundits say about our leaders and those who want to become our leaders. This is what I am hearing about the presidential race so far in 2016: On the Republican side– Trump is a racist and a sexist; Cruz misuses religion to gain votes; Rubio voted for illegal aliens to gain citizenship; Bush is guilty of being a Bush; Christie is guilty of siding with Obama. On the Democratic side– Hillary is in one scandal after another (e.g. Benghazi, Emails, Speeches); Sanders is an old socialist refurbished in empty promises. Now I must admit, these descriptions are from their opponents. Some are true, some are false, and some fall somewhere in between. You decide.
Each one of these candidates wants your vote and will do or say just about anything to get it. The polls say one or the other is leading the others, depending upon which day you view them. I have heard that there are lies, damnable lies, and then there are statistics. Yet, wisdom tell us that polls don’t elect a president, voters do. Now, all of this got me thinking. All of these politicians want power and they are willing to spend all of their time, money, and energy to get it. Wouldn’t it be a marvelous thing if Christians wanted eternal life just as much?
Wouldn’t it be nice to see people seeking the knowledge of God in order to be saved the same way politicians seek ways to get elected (Prov 23:23)? Wouldn’t it be nice to see preachers and teachers seeking to save those who are lost like politicians are seeking voters? Politics is nothing more than a horse race, where you pick a horse based upon a hunch and misinformation and are willing to bet on them to win. Sadly, most people do the same with religion. They usually follow the religion and misinformation of their parents, and are willing to bet their eternal soul that they are right with God.
One thing I have learned about politics is not to believe in polls, pundits, or the politician themselves. If a politician is breathing, he or she is usually lying or stretching the truth as much as they can get away with. This is why I will look and marvel at politicians and watch the best liar win. Yet, I still marvel at their tenacity to look people straight in the eye and tell them exactly what they want to hear.
Politicians are like the false prophets and teachers who will tell their audience exactly what they want to hear as opposed to what they need to hear. Notice the words of the apostle Paul about these kind: “ Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple” (Rom 16:17,18). Let us not forget that polls don’t elect someone to political office, but votes do. Even so, the doctrines and commandments of men don’t save a person, but the gospel and doctrine of Christ does (Tit 1:14).
I write not unto you as a politician but as one who cares for your soul. I have nothing whatsoever to gain from you nor do I desire monetary gain from you for preaching the gospel and doctrine of Christ. My reward, if I am judged faithfully, will be at the judgment. This is what I also desire for you. As Jesus taught, lose the world and gain salvation. “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul (Mt 16:24-26)?
If a politician wants to lose an election, just say what Walter Mondale said in the election of 1984 “Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won’t tell you. I just did”. Mondale didn’t just lose, he lost every state in the union except his home state of Minnesota and even that state was a nail biter. He told Americans the truth and paid the consequences for it. That’s rare for any politician. If a Christians want to lose at this life, just teach the unadulterated truth of God and even his own family will turn against him. This is why Jesus told his own disciples, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that takes not his cross, and follows after me, is not worthy of me. He that finds his life shall lose it: and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it” (Mt 10:34-39).
Christians don’t have the choices of the world. As Paul said, “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ” (2 Cor 2:17). Christians don’t have the liberty to preach lies for monetary gain and still gain eternal life (1 Tim 6:3-10). Teachers of God’s Word will be held to a greater degree of accountability for teaching error (Jam 3:1).
Yes, I do admire the zeal of the politician and the false teacher, and would desire to see such zeal among Christians in teaching God’s Word. Yet, the politician and the false teacher will reap the whirlwind for gaining the world (Hos 8:7). Sadly, many Christians will also reap the whirlwind for not seeking and saving those who are lost (Lk 19:10). Let our zeal be even as Paul’s zeal was for Israel to be saved (Rom 10:1). “For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh” (Rom 9:3). Let us seek first the Kingdom of heaven and then let us seek to save that which is lost (Mt 6:33)!
