The scriptures, which cannot lie verifies this to be truth: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it’, (Proverbs 22:6). Some would like to teach that this saying is not true, however, it is from God and is therefore truth.
The word “Train” means: “to guide or to prepare as to the development of a child, mentally, morally,, physically, spiritually; to instruct so as to make proficient.” Perhaps failure has resulted when parents did not fulfill their obligation as the instructor. They have taken the easy course, hoping that the school and church will do their job for them.
Some fail to properly discipline their children by spanking their children. They say that spanking is ‘child abuse’. I wonder what they think the ‘electric chair’ or a ‘lethal injection’ is, because this is where most uncorrected children end up. The scripture command parents not to withhold the rod from the child (spare the rod, spoil the child). “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. If you beat him with a rod you will save his life from hell” (Proverbs 23:13, 14). The principle that a house divided against itself cannot stand applies where rearing children is concerned. Children soon find out they can get away with anything when a mother and father openly oppose and refute each other’s decisions and disciplinary actions.
If we truly train up our children in the Lord, they will not depart from it. If we let the formative years go by, and then try and correct them, yes, they will depart. Thus the words of preacher who said, “Remember now your creator in the days of your youth… (Eccl 12:1) is very imperative to our eventual end.
I wonder how many souls will be lost eternally due to the unconcerned attitude and lack of love which we have for the enforcement of training we give our children. We live in a generation of adults who were not corrected as the bible commands us to do as parents. Thus, we have sown the wind and are reaping the whirlwind (Hos 8:7). When a nation rejects God and his word they will have men marrying men and women marrying women. You will have men and women going naked and feeling no shame. You will find liars, racism, and bigotry in their leaders. You will find young and old alike shacking up (fornication). You will find elders, deacons, and preachers living in adultery. You will find children killing their parents and challenging law enforcement’s authority. You will find a people who reject government. You will find people taking the law in their own hands. Is it any wonder why our penal system is over crowded? Is it any wonder why the wicked won’t accept correction? “The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God (Ps 9:17).
If we as a nation want God placed back in our government, our schools, and our churches, it is high time we start where it all begins, in the home. Teach your children about God’s Word. Teach your children right from wrong based upon the scripture. Above all this, correct your children when they do wrong; not just with words, but with constructive punishment, with love and understanding. A strong society begins with godly parents. A wicked nation begins when they reject God.
