It is obvious for members of the body of Christ to see how the Baptist and other denominations who contend that “faith only” saves is pure false doctrine. Not only does common sense defy such ignorance, but also God’s Word. Faith without works is dead, true! (Jam 2:19,20) A man is justified by works and not faith only, true! (Jam 2:24) Now, let us turn the reflection of God’s light toward us and see if we are also found wanting.
I know of few churches of Christ who don’t study God’s Word each Lord’s day and midweek. One might think this to be commendable and in many ways it is (2 Tim 2:15). However, believing in Christ is also commendable, but it falls short of what is required for a person to be saved (Mk 16:16). Even so, studying God’s Word is worthless if we don’t apply what we have learned. What is the purpose of studying God’s Word if we are not going to teach and preach to others the gospel and doctrine of Christ? Notice the admonition of the Hebrew writer, “For when for the time you ought to be teachers, you have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb 5:12-14).
No, I am not speaking of your local preacher who preaches to the same Christians every week and gains little. I am speaking of using every means possible to spread the Good News to the world who needs it most. There was a time when the only means of preaching and teaching God’s Word was limited to church gatherings and going from house to house. Today, not only do we still have these, but we also have print, radio, T.V., and internet.
If you are a faithful member of the churches of Christ who is well versed and well grounded in sound doctrine, it is imperative for you to use what knowledge of God’s Word you have in the Vineyard of the Lord. Women were used to assist men in the first century to spread God’s Word and they are also needed today. No, women didn’t do the preaching or teaching, but they helped in matters that men didn’t have the capability or time to accomplish. Therefore Christian women, help faithful Christian men in whatever capacity they are in need of to carry forth the Word of God to the world. Faithful men and women are coheirs of the same promise, and they are coworkers in the Kingdom of the Lord (Gal 3:27-29). They don’t have the same work, but they do have the same responsibility.
If faith without works is dead, then studying God’s Word without teaching is dead also. If you are weak in the faith and have need to study God’s Word, then by all means, do it. However, if you are a mature Christian, not a novice any longer, it’s time to do the work of God. Therefore well studied brethren, take up your bible and your knowledge of God’s Word and teach and preach while there is yet day, for the day will come when no man can work (Jn 9:4)!
