Many liberal minded churches of Christ will call anyone who adheres to the teaching of “Speaking where the bible speaks and remaining silent where the bible is silent” as a legalist. This is the term denominations penned long ago on all churches of Christ who taught that anyone who obeys not the gospel of Christ will go to hell (2 Thess 1:7-9).
So, I ask any liberal minded church of Christ member, will a sinner go to hell if they obey not the gospel of Christ? Now before you answer, remember this, if you speak where the bible speaks and remain silent where the bible is silent on this subject, then you truly are a hypocrite. A Pharisee or a hypocrite is what liberals define as a legalist. According to them a legalist goes exactly by what the bible literally says. If liberals are teaching that one can go to heaven separate and apart from the gospel, then they truly are a denomination. If they teach one must obey the gospel of Christ in order to go to heaven, as the scripture literally says, then they’ve defined themselves as a hypocrite. They are a hypocrite for teaching book, chapter, and verse on the gospel, yet ‘do as you please’ on the doctrine of Christ and his apostles.
What is odd is that most don’t even know that Jesus never once condemned the Pharisees by going by the letter of the law. No! What Jesus condemned was that the Pharisees taught the letter of the law, but they did not obey it. As Jesus told his own disciples, “Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, ‘Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not after their works: for they say, and do not'” (Mt 23:1-3).
Therefore, Liberal minded, when you see a Conservative following the letter of the law of Christ, you are commanded by Jesus Christ to obey them. If they are teaching the letter of the law, but not following it, then obey what they teach you to do. However, don’t do as they do if they are not abiding by the doctrine of Christ (2 Jn 2 f; Acts 2:42).
The only thing that divides the churches of Christ and denominations is our strict adherence to the gospel of Christ. The only thing that divides the liberal and conservative churches of Christ, is the conservative’s strict adherence to the doctrine of Christ. Jesus truly built only one church, of which He is the head (Mt 16:18 f; Col 1:18). It is called by His name, and entrance is gained by our obedience to the gospel (Eph 1:22,23 ff; Col 1:18; 1 Cor 12:13,27; Acts 2:47; Rom 16:16). It is the continuance in the doctrine of Christ which saves us (2 Jn 9 f; Jn 8:31,32). Anyone who adds to the gospel shall be accursed (Gal 1:6-9). Anyone who abides not by the doctrine of Christ has not God the Father (2 Jn 9).
Let us all learn by the example of the apostles of Jesus Christ not to go beyond that which was written, then can we all say that we are united as one (1 Cor 4:6 f; 1 Cor 11:1). Are we not all commanded to be united and to speak the same thing? Listen to the Words of Paul who said, “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Cor 1:10). Remember what Jesus told the Pharisees, “You hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, ‘This people draws near unto me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Mt 15:7-9). How can we all speak the same thing year after year, generation after generation, if we are speaking the commandments of men which perish, and not speaking the oracles or the very words of God, which endures forever and shall judge us all (Col 2:22 ff; 1 Pet 4:11 ; 1 Pet 1:23-25; Jn 12:48; Rom 2:16)?
