Billions come the day of judgment will stand before God and think that they will be saved. They will say to God, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, and in your name cast out devils and in your name done MANY WONDERFUL WORKS” (Matt 7:22). Yet, God will tell then he never new them (Mt 7:23). Why? Because they were doing the works of men and not the works of God.
When I see the Pope, I think of this verse because he goes everywhere proclaiming Jesus as the Christ, but all in vain. Nuns who devote themselves to abstinence and service to God, but all in vain. Preachers and teachers who proclaim another gospel and doctrine foreign to God’s Word, all in vain.
And now I address the church which Christ died for and paid for with his own blood. You too will stand before God doing things God never once commanded you to do. Yes, you think it good. Yes, you think it profitable. Yes, you think you will be rewarded for doing such things. Yet, just like the denominations, you too may hear the same words if you continue down the road of self-righteousness.
No one told you to have women teaching bible classes. In fact, you have the Word of God commanding women to remain silent in the churches and not to be speakers (1 Cor 15:33-40). No one told you to have banquets. In fact, you have God’s Word commanding you to eat at home and not in the churches (1 Cor 11:22,34). No one told you to command midweek bible studies. In fact, no where in the new testament did the church gather each and every week on any other day other than the first day of the week (Acts 20:7).
The denominations say to themselves, what is the harm doing wonderful works in the name of Jesus. Yet, this is what Jesus was speaking of when he said to the Pharisees, “…In vain you do worship me, teaching for doctrine the commandments of men (Mt 15:9). The only thing that makes the gospel have saving power; and the only thing that makes continuing in the apostle’s doctrine have saving power is the very fact that GOD COMMANDED IT. Man made traditions, doctrines, and commandments have no saving power whatsoever.
Don’t waste your time doing what man contrived in his mind as good and wonderful works. Do what God commanded you, no more and no less and please the ONE who has the power to either save your soul or cast it into hell (1 Cor 4:6 ff; 1 Pet 4:11; Mt 10:28).
