God’s Ultimatums

Biblical Proof

The word ultimatum according to Webster’s dictionary means, “A final, uncompromising demand or set of terms issued by a party to a dispute, the rejection of which may lead to a severance of relations or to the use of force. A final proposal or statement of conditions.”

In the scriptures, God made ultimatums upon his people and all of mankind. Upon Adam and Eve he told them not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. If you do, you will die! Gen 2:16,17 God through Moses gave Pharaoh 10 ultimatums. Either let my people go or be plagued. Eventually, Pharaoh reluctantly let Israel go, only to follow after them in hot pursuit, which lead to his entire army drowning in the the Red Sea.  Under the law of Moses, God gave Israel the ultimatums of either obeying Him or dying. If they committed adultery, they were stoned to death. If they murdered another, they too were killed. It was either obey God or die!

In the new testament, God continued to give mankind ultimatums. Jesus said, “…If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”  Jn 8:24 Jesus also said, “I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” Lk 13:3 Jesus commanded his apostle to preach unto all the world, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” Mk 16:16 These are not merely choices we can make without repercussions. No! Jesus wanted it known to everyone, either do them or be cast into a burning hell forever and ever. Paul made this clear to the Thessalonians when he said, “…When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” 2 Thess 1:7-9.

When those on the day of Pentecost asked what shall we do, Peter said, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38 The jailer asked the same pivotal question, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Their answer was the same, believe and be baptized. Acts 16:30-33 If man preached another gospel they would be accursed. If they altered God’s Word, they would be be plagued and have their names removed from the book of life. Rev 22:18,19 If man continued not in the doctrine of Christ, aka the apostolic doctrine, they would have no part of God. 2 Jn 9

Obeying God is not a mere choice, it is an ultimatum. We can either obey the gospel and continue in the doctrine of Christ and go to heaven when we die, or we can disobey God and be cast into the lake of fire. These are the only two choices we have been given. Simply put, obey God or die! Rom 11:22
