Is there is anything in a name? The Lord’s name is not Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Mormon, Adventist, Episcopal, etc. There is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved, and yet his name is not worth placing upon their assembly? Acts 4:12
The house which Solomon built for God which was built in Jerusalem was called by His Name. “David said to Solomon, ‘My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God:’” 1 Chron 22:7 “You had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by MY NAME:” Jer 34:15
Seven centuries before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Isaiah the prophet prophesied of the church when he said, “It shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’s HOUSE shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come you, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the HOUSE of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” Isa 2:2-3
In the New Testament, the church is referred to as the ‘Household of God’ and as a Holy Temple’ for the Lord’s habitation (Eph. 2:19-22). Paul declared how “men ought to behave themselves in the HOUSE of GOD, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Tim. 3:15). Peter also described the church as a ‘SPIRITUAL HOUSE’ (1 Pet. 2:5).
The Lord’s House was established in the last days as was prophesied by the prophet Joel. The church was established at Pentecost where the first baptized believing Christians were added by the Lord. Acts 2:37-47 Joel had prophesied that the Holy Spirit would be “poured forth” in “the last days” Joel 2:28 The apostle Peter quoted Joel’s prophesy in connection with the outpouring of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost. “This is that which has been spoken through the prophet Joel:” (Acts 2:16-17).
There is no other name which can save but the name of Christ. No one can be saved separate and apart from the church, for all Christians are added to the Lord’s church. Acts 2:47 So, what is the name of the Lord’s church? We know that the church was also called the “Body” (Col 1:18). Jesus is the head of the body (the church) of Christ. Eph 1:22,23 f; Eph 4:12 All confessed believers who have repented of their sins are baptized into the BODY of CHRIST, or the CHURCH of CHRIST. Rom 10:9,10 ff; Acts 2:38; 1 Cor 12:13 The church was also called “The Church of God”, (Acts 20:28) “The Church of the firstborn”, (Heb 12:23) and “The churches of Christ”. (Rom 16:16) All such names were in reference to Jesus Christ.
Therefore, it is conclusive that the Lord’s church has a definitive NAME. Jesus built it, died for it, paid for it, and thus it bears HIS NAME and HIS NAME only! The saints are individually called by his name, CHRISTIAN, and collectively they are called by His NAME, “The CHURCH OF CHRIST”. Rom 16:16
There is only ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, and ONE BAPTISM. Eph 4:5 All who obey the gospel are added to just ONE CHURCH, the CHURCH OF CHRIST. Acts 2:47 f; Eph 4:4 All who do not shall be condemned! 2 Thess 1:7-9
