When anyone defends the truth of God against false doctrine, the same scripture he teaches is twisted and used against him: They say, “He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness” (I Tim. 6:3-5). In effect, those who seek to expose the errors of the day are called trouble makers and against unity and peace. They are called perverted, corrupt and labeled as a heretic; so, “from such withdraw yourself.” These things are all mouthed and mumbled against faithful gospel preachers who seek to turn alien brethren from the doctrines of men, which turn man from the truth (Tit 1:14). In truth, anyone who fights any false doctrine at any time will be falsely accused and accursed.
However, Paul was not in reality describing those who “fight the good fight of faith.” Then, whose portrait is it? Who is the real person that “is proud, knowing nothing?” Who is the man who generates “questions and strifes of words, whereof comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings?” Paul answers that it is the man who dares to “teach otherwise, and consents not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness” (1 Tim. 6:3). He is the guilty party. The one who will “teach otherwise;” the man who will “consent not to wholesome (sound) words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ;” the man who will not submit “to the doctrine which is according to godliness,” that man, yes that man is your real troublemaker! The man who adds or subtracts from God’s Word, this man is the real troublemaker. The one who serves not our Lord Jesus Christ, but rather their own belly (Rom 16:17,18). He is the one who teaches perversion and agrees with every wind of doctrine mankind may devise in order to get monetary gain from them (Eph 4:14 f; 1 Tim 6:5-10). As many false teachers have gone out in the world, many will follow their destructive ways (2 Pet 2:3 f; 1 Jn 4:1).
Brethren have often condemned faithful Christians who were standing in the ranks for the cause of truth. Men whose only goal in life was to seek and save the lost and anyone who has erred from the faith (Lk 19:10 f; Jam 5:19,20). Elijah was deemed a troublemaker for standing against idolatry (1 Kin 18:17); Paul was deemed a mad man for preaching the gospel (Acts 26:24); Peter and John were deemed ignorant men for preaching the resurrection of Christ (Acts 4:13). If you are one of the few who dares stand up for the gospel and doctrine of Christ and his apostles, even as Elijah rejected the slander of Ahab and Jezebel, you will know God’s Word is on your side. You will know that false teachers accuse and slander those who oppose them, even as their father, the Devil, is truly defined. Why? Because the truth is not on their side. Therefore, they argue over words to no profit. They use man made definitions to redefine the Holy Word of God. They will turn and twist God’s Word by using a fallacious bible translations against a trusted translation of the bible. They will use lexicons and commentaries in order to prove their doctrine is true and God’s Word is false.
True teachers of God’s Word loves God’s Word, and will not adulterate it by the opinions and doctrines of men. They speak the very words of God and deviate neither to the right or to the left (1 Pet 4:11 f; 1 Cor 4:6). And despite what their accusers will tell you, they are not out to destroy you, but rather they love you and desire to save your soul from death and hide a multitude of sins (Jam 5:20). To this end the prophets and apostles devoted their entire lives, and Jesus laid down his very life, even so do true teachers of God’s Word (1 Jn 3:16).
