Have you ever wondered how God will feel come the day of judgment about all the time we waste when we could have been working for the Lord? I have, and I must say, we are all guilty of wasting time at one time or the other. Whether it be watching TV, surfing the internet, or just day dreaming, all are busying doing unprofitable things.
Actually, time is life’s most precious commodity. When we are young we are attending school for 8 hours, spending time studying at home, and doing things we will later regret or be embarrassed to admit. When we become adults, our time is spent working, marriage, and raising children. The rest of our time will be spent eating, drinking and sleeping.
So, how do we find time to serve God? Serving God should be our full time position in life, but it isn’t. If one worships God each time the church doors are opened, one is considered pious. The question one must consider is: How much time does God require of man?
Actually, God only requires the saints to worship Him each first day of the week. That is all that is commanded of Christians. This they must do in order to remember the Lord’s death by partaking of the communion and to give of one’s means. Acts 20:7 f; 1 Cor 16:1-3 All other meetings by the church are not required by Christ or his apostles, nor were they ever inferred. All acts of worship can be achieved upon this one day.
Faithful men of God are commanded to preach and teach God’s Word. Anything that interferes with this duty which are not essential to the support of one’s family and the essentials of life are a waste of time. Let us briefly touch upon a few things that many Christians do which are a big waste of time.
Too many brethren involve themselves with the evil works of politics. I cannot count all the times I see and hear preachers of God’s Word actually preach politics as if such come from the bible. What is worse is that they will perpetuate innuendos, exaggerations, and outlandish lies in order to perpetuate their cause. All liars shall have their part in the lake of fire. Rev 21:8
Doctrines Of Men
Most all brethren participate, encourage and teach for doctrine the commandments of men. Jesus said that all who do such, worship God in vain. In other words, they are wasting their time by doing such things. Mt 15:7-9
Most all denominations use instruments of music. They waste their time by adding to God’s Word. No one is commanded to sing with the use of instruments. Actually, all one is commanded to do is to sing and make melody in their hearts to the Lord. Eph 5:19 Anything beyond this is in violation of going beyond that which was written. 1 Cor 4:6
Eating In The Church
Most all churches of Christ and denominations have this one thing in common. They will from time to time, and most at the churches’ expense, have a banquet where both sinner and saint alike is invited to attend. Instead of feeding one another the bread of life, that is, the Word of God, they will waste their time feeding people who have plenty of food in their cupboards. Instead of helping the needy saints, most are quick to feed the greedy saints. Paul praised not any who ate in the church at Corinth, and gave commandment for those who are hungry to eat at home. 1 Cor 11:22,34
Anything God Didn’t Command
Anything that we do which was not commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ and his apostles are a waste of a Christian’s time. Christians men are commanded to preach, teach, and to lead the church according to the Word of God in an out of season. 2 Tim 4:2-5 Husbands are to provide and be the head of their family. 1 Tim 5:8 Wives are to submit their own husbands, bear children, and to be chaste keepers at home. Tit 2:4-5 All the saints are commanded to study God’s Word and to assemble each first day of the week. 2 Tim 2:15 f; Acts 20:7 Beyond these things, all the saints are to do good unto all men, especially the saints of God. Gal 6:10
The saints of God don’t have much time available to them to do the works of God, much less, wasting our time doing things which God never commanded us to do. Let us labor doing those things which God commanded us to do and be content therewith not to go beyond that which was written. Let us stop wasting what little time we do have doing the works of men, and start using our time wisely doing the very works of God!
