Mankind is quick to tell one to go there. They are quick to use the name when they are enraged. Most have heard of the place the Bible calls Hell, but few indeed have any real concept of what hell is like. To many, it is just a word to use in a vile way. Some people think there is no such place or condition as hell. These individuals are unbelievers, simply refusing to believe the facts of God’s words. Many of this class profess to believe in heaven, but deny the existence of hell. They believe the part of the Bible they want to, and disbelieve the rest.
There is such a place called Hell: “You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the damnation of hell? (Matt. 23:33). It is the place of damnation for the condemned (Mt. 23:33). It is not suffered in this life, but rather after this life: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Mt. 10:28).
Such damnation will begin, not immediately at death, but at the resurrection of all the dead: “Marvel not at this for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation” (Jn 5:28-29).
It is where the fire will never be quenched: “. . . to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched” (Mk 9:47-48). The devil and his angels will also be ‘punished there: “. . . Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (Mt. 25:41).
Its punishment will torment the wicked for ever, which is the same time the righteous will enjoy eternal life: “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous unto life eternal” (Mt. 25:46). Those who obey not the gospel will be thus punished: “. . . the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them who know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thess. 1 :7-9).
The offenders in His kingdom will be there: “The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and they which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth” (Mt. 13:41). It is a place to be concerned about, in this life feared and avoided while we are in this life (Mt. 10:28).
Hell is heated by fire and brimstone. How hot is brimstone? It was brimstone which fell on Sodom and Gomorrah. The hottest volcano registers 29% sulfur and is able to melt anything in its sight. The remains of Sodom and Gomorrah was tested to be 98% sulfur and that after thousands of years. Thus, Sodom and Gomorrah was quickly turned into ashes.
All faithful Christians are presently being tormented and persecuted for the cause of Christ, to this end were they called. (1 Pet 2:20,21) Judgment has already begun for faithful Christians, but it will be nothing in comparison to the hell for those who know not God and obey not his gospel. The kind of suffering all faithful Christians suffer is but for a short time, but hell and damnation is forever and ever. (1 Pet 5:9,10)
Surely mankind should be fearful of this place called hell and quickly run to the truth, and obey it. If you show no fear of hell and no concern to really know the truth, believe me, on the day of judgment you will. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Mt 8:12) Hell is never full and ever growing and fully able to contain the many who shall be cast into it. (Isa 5:14)
Hell is real and prepared for all sinners. “How shall you escape the damnation of hell?” (Mt. 23:33) It is quite simple. Submit to the gospel of Christ and obey it and remain faithful to it. “It’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Heb 10:31) Therefore, “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man”, “For our God is a consuming fire”! (Eccl 12:13 f; Heb 12:29)
