Do you know what happens when a church of Christ member uses denominational lexicons to define the Word of God? Do you know what happens when a church of Christ member uses denominational commentaries to prove their doctrine? Do you know what happens when a church of Christ member uses denominational doctrines in lieu of the doctrines of Christ and his apostles?
What you get is a member who accuses faithful members of being a “Legalist”. What you get is a member who had rather to be entertained, as opposed to working for the Lord. What you get is a member who places his trust in politicians, as opposed to faithful brethren. What you get is a member who places man’s opinions over the commandments of the Lord. What you get is a lost soul in the disguise of a Christian.
Christians are warned against using the traditions and commandments of men. Jesus said, “ Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” (Mt 15:7-9) Take note that Jesus called one a hypocrite who said, but did not. Notice the denominations who say that they believe in Jesus but do not the things which he said. (Mt 7:21) Case in point, Jesus said, “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved,” (Mk 16:16) Denominations are quick to say that they believe in Jesus, but refuse to be buried with Christ by baptism. (Rom 6:3,4)
The philosophies of men usually sound soft to the ear, but they bear no resemblance to the truth of God. Paul warned against the wisdom of men. He said, “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Col 2:8) It was this same Paul who warned a young Timothy by saying, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. ” (2 Tim 4:3,4)
Christians are commanded to prove all things and hold firm that which is good. (1 Thess 5:21) They are commanded to speak the oracles or very words of God. (1 Pet 4:11) They are commanded not to go beyond that which was written. (1 Cor 4:6) Is it any wonder why so many churches of Christ are more liberal than many denominations? Is it any wonder why many churches of Christ practice denominational doctrines? If you want to turn a church of Christ into a denomination, let them use denominational lexicons, commentaries, philosophies, and doctrines. If you want a Church of Christ member to remain faithful unto death, let them speak where the bible speaks and remain silent where the bible is silent.
