There is always a possibility for man to err from the truth. God does not hold men to the truth by force or some irresistible compulsion (2 Pet. 1:10). Obeying the truth of God is voluntary, our choice. In a variety of ways people will stray from the truth and fall from grace. (Gal 5:4) How?
By Closing Their Ears
Paul warned that men would gather about them teachers who would scratch their itching ears, “And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Tim. 4:3, 4).
The Lack of knowledge Of God’s Word
Men are lead astray because they have little or no knowledge of God’s Word. Solomon wrote, “He shall die for lack of instruction, and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.” Hosea said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you..” Hos 4:6
“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation . , .?” (Heb. 2:3). “Take heed, brethren,, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God” (Heb. 3:12).
Doctrines Other Than Of Christ
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,” 1 Tim 4:1-2 “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” Col 2:8
Jesus warned us, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” Matt 7:15 Peter also warned about false teachers, “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.” 2 Peter 2:1-3 John tells us, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 Jn 4:1 “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived” (2 Tim. 3:13). Peter warned of men who twist the scriptures, cautioning his readers not to be led away with the error of the wicked (2 Pet, 3:16,17).
Conclusion: Let us not think it a small thing that we can be lead astray by a multitude of things which are out to attack us. Sometimes it’s by demons and false teachers and sometimes it’s by our own neglect. Paul tells all Christians to put on the whole armor of God that we might stand against the trickery of the Devil. (Eph 6:11) We are commanded to study God’s Word, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Tim 2:15) If we do this brethren, we shall be able to resist false teaching and their devilish doctrines.
