In 1965 Paul Harvey, a radio commentator, revealed what he thought the Devil would want for society and churches. Here is what he said:
“If I were the Prince of Darkness, I would want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I would have one-third of the real estate and four-fifths of the population , but I wouldn’t be happy until I had the ripest apple on the tree. So I’d set about, however necessary, to take over the United States.
I’d subvert the churches first; I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: “Do as you please.”
To the youth I would whisper, “The Bible is a myth.”
I would convince them that man made God instead of the other way around.
I would confide that what’s bad is good and what’s good is “square.”
In the ears of the young married I would whisper that work is debasing, that cocktail parties are good for you.
And to the old I would teach to pray after me: “Our Father, who art in Washington…”
And then I’d get organized; I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that everything else would appear dull and uninteresting.
I’d threaten television with dirtier movies and vice versa.
I’d peddle narcotics to whom I could; I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction; I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.
If I were the Devil I’d soon have families at war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames.
If I were the Devil I’d encourage schools to refine young intellects but neglect to discipline emotions: let those run wild. Before you know it, you’d have to have drug-sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every school house door. Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing.
With flattery and promises of power I would get the courts to do what I construe as against God and in favor of pornography.
I’d designate an atheist to front for me before the highest courts and I’d get the preachers to say, “She’s right.” Thus, I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the Houses of Congress.
And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys, girls, and church money.
If I were the Devil I would make the symbol of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.
If I were the Devil I’d take from those who have and give it to those who want it, until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.
What’ll you bet that I couldn’t get whole States to promote gambling as the way to get rich?
I would caution against extremes: in hard work, in patriotism, and in moral conduct.
I would convince the youth that marriage is old-fashioned, but swinging is more fun; that what you see on television is the way to be; and thus I could undress you in public and I could lure you into bed where there are diseases for which there is no cure.
Then I would separate families, putting children in uniform, women in coal mines and objectors in slave-labor camps.
In other words, if I were the Devil, I’d just keep doing what he’s doing.”
No, Paul Harvey’s idea of the Devil is quite different than what the bible teaches us. First of all, The Devil is the father of all liars. (Jn 8:44) He proved this in the Garden of Eden when he lied to Eve. What is notable about that encounter was that the Serpent only added one word to what God had commanded Adam and Eve. The one word was “Not”. God said, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die.” (Gen 2:16,17) And the serpent said unto the woman, “You shall not surely die:” (Gen 3:4)
The Devil knows what God has said in the scriptures. Make no mistake about Satan, he is in every church and appears to be the children of light. (2 Cor 11:14,15) He is your preacher, your teacher, your elder and your deacon. He can be just about anyone, and he is set to deceive you by whatever means at his disposal. As the scriptures instruct us, he is very subtle. (Gen 3:1)
If one were to focus on what the Devil wanted out of mankind, it would take more than a shopping list to reveal his evil intent. Let’s make this perfectly clear, the Devil could care less what religion you belong to or what political party you affirm. No! The Devil knows both political parties are just as evil as the other one. The Democratic party is immoral. The Republican party is greedy. Both parties are liars just like the Devil himself. The more time you spend on politics is less time you can work for God. The Devil knows no one is saved by being a Democrat or Republican. All human beings have a limited time here on earth and the more time the Devil can get you to waste your time doing evil, the less time you can focus on saving you or someone else from the flames of hell.
Actually, the Devil wants you to enjoy this life so much that you can’t imagine how good heaven will be. He rewards all who deny God’s existence (Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters are prime examples). The more you turn from God, the more the Devil rewards you. He deceives so called Christians into believing that the more they serve God, the more they shall be rewarded here on earth. Nothing could be further from the truth. (2 Tim 3:12 f; 1 Pet 4:12,16)
It is true that the Devil is out to deceive mankind from being saved. Thus, his first aim is to make all who seek God not trust the bible to be God’s Word. To Jews, he blinds them that Jesus is not the Messiah. To Christians, he blinds them to believe that the Bible is not all inspired. (2 Tim 3:16) To others he blinds them to believe that the law of Moses is still in effect. (Col 2:14) To the Baptist, he blinds them to believe that baptism is not necessary for salvation. (Mk 16:16) To the Catholics, he blinds them to believe that infant baptism (Sprinkling, Pouring, Christening) is sufficient for salvation. (Acts 8:35-39) To the churches of Christ, he deceives them to believe that following God’s Word explicitly is an act of legalism or being like the Pharisees. (Mt 15:7-9) The Devil is not against religion. Make no mistake about it, the Devil wants you to waste your time obeying every man made doctrine you can. What he doesn’t want is for anyone to obey the gospel of Christ and remain faithful to the doctrine of Christ. This he knows brings forth salvation. (Mk 16:16 f; 2 Jn 9)
As concerning morality, the Devil has been very clear. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you die. (Lk 12:19) It’s true, tomorrow you will die, but indulging yourself in what God has forbidden will send you straight to hell. This is why the Devil wants you to be gay (homosexual or lesbian). He is not against marriage. The Devil is against marriage as defined by God (One man and One Woman). The Devil is all for adulterous marriages. The Devil is for fornication, but is against marital fidelity. (Heb 13:4)
The bottom line is, the Devil is against anything God has commanded for mankind to do in order to be saved. For the most part, the Devil has nothing to worry about when it comes to mankind. He knows two thirds were made for hell and will be going there with no help from him. (2 Pet 2:12) He just leaves them to their own devices. The troublemakers for the Devil are the ones who believe in God, Christ and the Holy Spirit, believes the bible was totally inspired of God, who obeys the full gospel of Christ, and remains faithful to the doctrine of Christ.
So, actually, Paul Harvey had it all wrong. The Devil is not making mankind do all of these evil things. No! The Devil is just leaving mankind to his own devices. As long as he can keep man from reading, studying, and learning of God’s Word. (2 Tim 2:15) As long as he can keep man from accepting God to be the author of the scripture. (2 Tim 3:16) As long as he can keep man believing that God’s Word can’t be trusted for the truth. (Jn 17:17) As long as he can keep appealing man with greed and immorality. (Gal 5:19-21) Then the Devil’s job is quite simple. If I were the Devil, I would keep doing what he has always done, because for the most part, it’s working.
