It is always bothering to me to hear so many in the religious world attribute the doctrines of men in Jesus’ name. The name of Jesus is more than a precious name, for with it comes power from on high. If Jesus said it, commanded it, or taught it, it comes with authority. Jesus truly said, “All power is given to me in heaven and in earth.” Mt 28:18 And with this authority, Jesus commanded that the gospel be preach unto all the world. Mt 28:19,20
Imagine, a reputable company with a respected and revered brand name who has disreputable companies producing knock-offs in their name. Can you also imagine a law suit once they discover who is not only stealing their profits, but their credibility as well? When Peter commanded all to speak the oracles of God, he meant we are not to deviate from God’s Word. 1 Pet 4:11 Why? Because once the opinions or doctrines of men are added to God’s Word, it has been adulterated. Just like the recipe that has an ingredient added or missing has been adulterated.
How can the Baptist subtract baptism from the great commission, and still call it the gospel of Christ? ‘Faith only’ is not the gospel of Christ, but rather the doctrine of the Baptist church. How can the Catholic add infant baptism and sprinkling, and still call it the gospel of Christ? Christening is not the gospel of Christ, but rather the doctrine of the Catholic church.
The churches of Christ wear the name of the one who built the church and died for it. Mt 16:18 ff; Acts 20:28; Rom 16:16 If they do not abide by the doctrine of Christ, they carry the Lord’s name in vain. Paul truly said, “Whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Col 3:17 It is not the will of man that will save us, but rather the will of our heavenly Father. Mt 7:21 Therefore, if we are going to bear the name of the Lord, we must also do whatever he has commanded. As preachers used to preach, “If you want the man, you have to obey the plan, the man Christ Jesus!” And that plan is the gospel and doctrine of Christ.
