There are many reasons why so many don’t obey the gospel of Christ, but none of them will be excused by God. Jesus said, wide is the gate and broad is the way which leads to destruction and many there be which go in thereat; because strait is the gate and narrow the way which leads to life and few there be that find it. Mt 7:13,14 Let us examine a few of the reasons why so many believe that they are immune from obeying God’s explicit commandment of obeying the glorious gospel of Christ.
There will be many on the day of judgment who either have no knowledge of the gospel of Christ or they have so little that it does them little good. Paul stated, “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained (Jesus Christ – Rom 2:16). He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” Acts 17:30-31 There will be some who have a zeal of God, but not according to the knowledge of God. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness (God’s commandments – Ps 119:172), are going about to established their own righteousness (commandments), have not submitted themselves to the righteousness (commandments) of God. Rom 10:2,3
There will be many who have the knowledge of God, and yet reject it. They are they which hear the Word of God, and don’t do it. Isa 30:31-33 They are they which profess they know God, but in works they deny him. Tit 1:16 They are ever learning, but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 2 Tim 3:7 They know to do good, but they do it not. Therefore, their sin is upon them. Jam 4:17 “Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remains.” Jn 9:41 Paul said, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” Rom 1:20
Then there are those who want to have it both ways. These are they which know the right way, and they also know the ways of the world. In other words, they want their cake and eat it too_they want both! These are they which serve two masters, God and money. Mt 6:24 Jesus said of these, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” Rev 3:15-16 These are they which love their family more than they love God. Mt 10:37 These are they which love the pleasures of the world more than the treasures in heaven. 2 Tim 4:10 These are they which love the praises of men more than the praise of God. Jn 12:43 These are they who worship and serve men more than God, changing the truth into a lie. Rom 1:25 These are they who love the riches of the world more than they love being rich in faith. 1 Tim 6:10f; Jam 2:5 These are they which love not the truth of God but had pleasures in unrighteousness. Thess 2:10-12 They either add to or take from, going beyond what God has written. 1 Cor 4:6
Conclusion: There are many reasons why mankind will lose their very soul, but only one way to save it. One must obtain the knowledge of God by studying to show themselves to be approved of God, rightly discerning the word of truth. 2 TIm 2:15 They can obtain this same knowledge by the means of preaching, but be ever mindful of false doctrine by searching the scriptures for themselves. Acts 17:11 One must then place their knowledge into action by believing that Jesus is the Christ the son of God, and not being ashamed to confess it before men. Rom 10:10 Then one must repent of their sins and have them washed away by the means of baptism. Acts 2:38f; Acts 22:16 Then one must take up their cross and abide by the doctrine of Christ unto death. Mt 10:38f; 2 Jn 9
