We are warned to avoid philosophies and deceit of men which derive from the traditions and principles of the world. Col 2:8 The gospel is to be preached not with the wisdom of man’s words. 1 Cor 1:17 Paul said his speech and preaching were not after the words of human wisdom, but what he had received of the Holy Spirit, that our faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1 Cor 2:4,5 God will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent, for the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. 1 Cor 1:19f; 1 Cor 3:19
The truth of the matter is this, that the Word of God is much too simple to misunderstand. It’s been said that the bible was written that even a child could understand it. Modern versions of the bible has removed the 618 antiquated words of the KJV making the bible easy to understand for anyone. Paul said, “I am afraid, lest as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds should be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.” 2 Cor 11:3 The apostles were simple men who preached a simple gospel. Should we be surprised that God has hid his Word to this very day from the wise and prudent, and has revealed it unto the simple? For so it seem good in God’s sight. Mt 11:25,26
Jesus said, “Do you not therefore err because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God. Mk 12:24 Notice, Jesus didn’t say one erred from the truth because they were ignorant of Greek or Hebrew lexicons, or hadn’t read of the commentaries of men . He didn’t say one erred from the truth because they were uneducated in the knowledge and wisdom of the world.
No! Jesus told us that we can only ascertain the truth by our learning of the scriptures. Paul told us to read and study the scriptures, and rightly divide the Word of truth. 1 Tim 4:13f; 2 Tim 2:15 Luke said the Bereans searched the scriptures to avert error. Acts 17:11 David says one is made wise by the law of God which is contained in the Word. Ps 19:7 Paul said the same to a young Timothy when he said that the scriptures makes one wise unto salvation, by faith, which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Tim 3:15
We must prove all things but not by the wisdom of men, but by the scriptures. 1 Thess 5:21 If we can’t prove the doctrine of Christ with book, chapter, and verse, we are abdicating our duty as a Christian to be set for the defense of the gospel, and to be able to contend for the faith. Philip 1:15-18; Jude 3 We must put on the whole armor of God to defend ourselves against the trickery of the Devil, and we must be skillful in the Word in order to be able to preach and teach it effectively. Eph 6:11-18f; Heb 5:12-14
