Each time we lay down our heads to sleep, it’s God who awakes us. God awakes us either here on earth, or in the life to come. It was the psalmist David who said, “I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Ps 4:8 Those who have obeyed the gospel of Christ, and are faithful to it each and everyday have already been awaken, but to those who haven’t obeyed the gospel, remain asleep. Let the scriptures reveal who is sleeping their eternal life away.
Rich Man and Lazarus
The rich man lived a complete life, and enjoyed his life to the fullest. He did just as the fool, he ate, drank and was happy. He was dressed in the most expensive clothes, and lived lavishly every day. This was his reward. Lk 6:24 No evil came upon him while he lived. He was proverbially asleep, and was awaken to face hell and damnation.
Lazarus was a sickly man who was a homeless beggar. His body was filled with sores. His only desire was for the crumbs which came from the rich man’s table. Though he laid at the gate of the rich man, and was seen and known of him, he received no pity from him. Only the dogs showed pity to come and lick his painful sores. Though awake all his life in his own hell here on earth, he was taken by the angels of God, and was allowed to sleep and be at rest in the total comfort of Abraham’s Bosom.
Jesus was the only one who has ever lived among men to know what the hereafter is all about, and able to accurately describe it. According to Jesus, once our appointed death comes, we all go to Hades. Hades is divided into two parts, one is a place for the wicked and one a place for the righteous.
All those who have not obeyed the gospel of Christ, lived lavishly, and suffered not for the cause of Christ shall receive God’s wrath. 2 Thess 1:7-9 These are the ones who are asleep in their sins. These shall be shocked and horrified when they are awaken from their sleep to an eternity of hell and damnation.
All those who have obeyed the gospel of Christ, and have suffered for His cause, enduring to the end shall receive God’s grace. These are the ones who understand what the will of God is, and have obeyed it. Eph 5:17 They have been buried with Christ, and quickened from the dead to walk a new life. Rom 6:3,4 They have suffered persecutions for the cause of Christ. 2 Tim 3:12 They have been fully tested and tried, and have died in the Lord. They shall sleep and be at rest from their labors, and receive a crown of eternal life. Rev 14:13f; Jam 1:12
Wake Up Call!
Paul said, “Awake you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light. See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore be you not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” Eph 5:14-17 Paul is truly saying what was said to him when he was converted. Ananias said, “Why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts 22:16
Paul knew what all the righteous know, that time is short, and the terror of God is great. Jam 4:14f; 2 Cor 5:11 He said, “Do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” Rom 13:11,12
Paul is revealing to everyone that we not only must obey the gospel, but that we also must put on the whole armor of God that we might be able to overcome the trials that are set before us. Eph 6:11-18 We must study to show ourselves approved of God, rightly dividing the Word of truth. 2 Tim 2:15 We must contend and defend the faith with this knowledge of God, being fully prepared to seek and save the lost, armoring ourselves with the gospel of Christ. Philip 1:15-18ff; Jude 3; Jam 5:19,20
Paul also had admonitions to those who had fallen away from the gospel. He said, “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.” 1 Cor 15:34 He told those who had justified themselves by the law of Moses that they had fallen from grace. Gal 5:4 He warned those who had so soon turned away from the grace of Christ to another gospel, a perverted gospel, and all who preach any another gospel would be accursed. Gal 1:7-9
Conclusion: This is your WAKE UP call. Today is the day of salvation. 2 Cor 6:2 If you are in your sins, or have fallen away from the gospel, Arise and Shine! “For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.” Isa 60:1 Come to the Light of His Word, for Christ has abolished death through the glorious gospel. 2 Cor 4:4f; 2 Tim 1:10 Awake you who sleep in the darkness of sin, and Christ shall make you the Light of the World! Eph 5:14f; Mt 5:14
